Taking care of your skin is an essential part of your health and beauty. Many people fail to take the necessary steps to insure that their skin is cared for properly, which can end up leaving them damaging one of the largest and most important organs on your body. Luckily, here are a couple things that you can start doing now to protect your skin and keep it healthy.

1. Careful About Your Showers

What happens in the shower is a major determinant of how healthy your skin is. This is for three reasons. First, don't shower too often. Many people take showers every single day. This habit will easily dry your skin out. The more water on your skin the drier and more unhealthy it will become. Thus, you should only shower a couple of times a week.

Second, don't take too hot of showers. Do you love hot scalding showers? If so, you are not alone. Many people take showers that are far too hot for their skin. The hot water also will dry out your skin and damage it.

Third, don't scrub with too harsh of a soap. Many people use the harshest soaps they can find. They think that in order to get clean they have to use something strong on their skin. This is not the case. Instead, using a mild, gentle cleanser is best for your skin.

2. Shave Correctly

Did you know that shaving can be healthy for your skin if done right? Conversely, if it is done wrong it could damage your skin. When you shave right you remove the top dead part of your skin, exfoliating the skin and encouraging it to be healthier.

To get the correct shave you should only shave in warm water; this will open the pores. Then choose a lather that you feel is best for your skin. Regular soap may not work well enough, so you might need gel, oil, conditioner, or high-moisturizing foaming gel. Make sure you get a thick lather so that the razor doesn't cut the skin, but just glides across the top layer. After you finish you should pat dry the area, don't rub it, and then use an after-shave or moisturizer. This will help to close the pores and keep the skin healthy.

By doing these simple things you can keep your skin healthy and looking beautiful every day. Talk to a dermatologist like Thomas P. Senter, M.D. for more information.
